Update Regarding Coronavirus in Qatar

The American Chemical Society (ACS) MENA 2020 conference is scheduled to take place as planned 10-12 March in Doha, Qatar.

Qatar’s Ministry of Public Health confirmed the nation’s first case of coronavirus COVID-19. No details were made available beyond updates from Hamad Medical Corporation.

The conference organizing committee is monitoring developments related to the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) outbreak and potential impact on global travel to the Qatar conference. At present, the conference hotel, the Ritz-Carlton, Doha, is  operating normally, and any changes to operating status will be communicated immediately to all registered meeting attendees and posted on the meeting website, http://acs.qa. For the most up-to-date information regarding the virus, please refer to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention website. The World Health Organization also provides up-to-date information, as well as the Qatar Ministry of Public Health.

To help ensure the health and safety of our conference attendees, we are planning to implement some onsite precautions for all participants, speakers and personnel, including but not limited to the following:

Increased availability of hand-sanitizing stations.

Increased cleaning and disinfection process across all high-volume touchpoints (catering areas, surfaces, handrails, restrooms, entrances/exits, touch-screens, etc.) along with the use of cleaning/sanitizing materials and products.

Awareness campaign of sanitizing efforts via online and onsite information and signage.

Availability of sanitizing and disinfection materials for public use.

We are also working to create a touch-free environment during the conference. We will adopt a “no handshake” policy and encourage each of you to reduce or eliminate business card exchanges.

We strongly urge attendees to implement appropriate guidelines and protocols as suggested by the World Health Organization and other health authorities. ACS will endeavor to provide a safe and healthy environment for all attendees.

Some other useful tips:

Wash your hands with anti-bacterial soap regularly.

Avoid touching objects or surfaces when traveling in airports and/or when using crowded modes of public transportation.

Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue or your elbow when coughing or sneezing.

Do not come to meetings or other conference events if you are sick, and seek immediate medical attention if you have flu-like symptoms.

We look forward to a safe and enjoyable conference.

Regards,
